Step by Step
The Road2Pass Training Process
From your first time behind the wheel to holding your full license, here\’s exactly how we\’ll guide you through each stage of learning to drive.
Step 1
Provisional License & Assessment
Before you can begin driving lessons, you’ll need a UK provisional driving license. You can apply online at gov.uk once you’re 15 years and 9 months old, though you can’t start driving until you’re 17. If you haven’t got yours yet, don’t worry – we’ll guide you through the application process.
What you\'ll learn:
- Apply for your provisional license at gov.uk
- Book your first lesson – an initial assessment drive
- We'll evaluate your current experience level
- Together, we'll create a personalized learning plan
- Discuss your goals, timeline, and any concerns
💡 Top Tip: Apply for your provisional early! Processing can take up to 3 weeks, so don’t wait until your 17th birthday.
Step 2
Basic Vehicle Control
Every driver starts here. In your early lessons, we focus on getting you comfortable with the vehicle controls in a safe, low-traffic environment. You’ll learn how the car responds to your inputs, building the foundational skills everything else builds upon.
What you\'ll learn:
- Cockpit drill – adjusting mirrors, seat, and steering
- Understanding the clutch, brake, and accelerator
- Moving off and stopping safely
- Basic steering control and hand positioning
- Gear changing (manual) or selector use (automatic)
💡 Top Tip: Don’t rush this stage. Strong basics make everything easier later. Many learners who struggled initially found success after mastering these fundamentals.
Step 3
Road Awareness & Positioning
Once you’re comfortable with the controls, we introduce you to real road driving. You’ll learn to read the road, position your car correctly, and interact safely with other road users. This is where you start thinking like a driver.
What you\'ll learn:
- Mirror-Signal-Maneuver (MSM) routine
- Lane positioning and road markings
- Dealing with junctions – T-junctions and crossroads
- Approaching roundabouts with confidence
- Speed awareness and appropriate speed selection
💡 Top Tip: Practice the MSM routine until it becomes second nature. Examiners watch closely for proper observation and signaling.
Step 4
Progressive Skills & Maneuvers
As your confidence grows, we introduce more complex driving situations and the specific maneuvers required for the driving test. You’ll practice in various road conditions and traffic levels, building your ability to handle whatever the road throws at you.
What you\'ll learn:
- Parallel parking and bay parking
- Reversing around corners
- Emergency stop procedure
- Hill starts – uphill and downhill
- Dual carriageways and faster roads
- Navigating complex junctions and traffic systems
💡 Top Tip: The examiner will ask you to perform one reversing maneuver and possibly an emergency stop. We’ll practice all scenarios so you’re prepared for any.
Step 5
Theory Test & Mock Exams
Your practical skills are only half the equation. We integrate theory test preparation throughout your lessons, but as your test approaches, we focus on ensuring you’re fully prepared for both the theory and practical examinations.
What you\'ll learn:
- Theory test multiple-choice practice
- Hazard perception training and techniques
- Road signs and markings revision
- Mock practical tests on actual test routes
- Feedback and improvement on weak areas
- Show me, tell me questions practice
💡 Top Tip: Book your theory test early and pass it before your practical lessons are complete. You need your theory certificate before you can book your practical test.
Step 6
Test Day & Beyond
The big day! We’ll ensure you’re fully prepared with test route practice, a calm and confident mindset, and all the skills you need to pass. But passing your test is just the beginning of your driving journey.
What you\'ll learn:
- Final preparation lesson before your test
- Warm-up drive on test morning to settle nerves
- Use of instructor's car for your test (if booked)
- Post-test feedback, whether you pass or need another attempt
- Pass Plus course for advanced skills (optional)
- You're a driver for life – safe driving habits established
💡 Top Tip: Test nerves are normal! Our pre-test routine helps you arrive calm and focused. Remember, your examiner wants you to pass.

Questions About the Learning Process
Have questions about learning to drive? Find answers to the most common questions about our training process, the driving test, and what to expect.
You need a valid UK provisional driving license, which you can apply for from age 15 years 9 months (though you can't drive until 17). You'll also need to be able to read a number plate from 20 meters. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you must wear them during lessons and your test. That's it – no prior experience necessary! We'll teach you everything from scratch.
Everyone learns at their own pace. The DVSA suggests an average of 45 hours of professional instruction plus 22 hours of private practice. However, many of our students pass in fewer hours due to our focused teaching approach. During your assessment lesson, we'll give you an honest estimate based on your aptitude and how often you can practice.
Your first lesson is an assessment and introduction. We'll meet you at your chosen location, check your provisional license, and discuss your goals and any concerns. If you're a complete beginner, we'll start with the basics – getting comfortable in the car, understanding the controls, and perhaps moving off in a quiet area. If you have some experience, we'll assess your current level. There's no pressure – we go at your pace.
The practical driving test lasts about 40 minutes and includes: an eyesight check, 'show me, tell me' vehicle safety questions, 20 minutes of independent driving (following sat-nav directions or road signs), and one reversing maneuver (parallel park, bay park, or pull up on the right). You may also be asked to perform an emergency stop. To pass, you must make no serious or dangerous faults and no more than 15 minor faults.
You book your practical test through the DVSA website at gov.uk/book-driving-test. You'll need your provisional license number, your theory test pass certificate number (you must pass theory before booking practical), and a debit/credit card for payment (£62 weekday, £75 evenings/weekends). We can help you choose a test centre and advise on the best time to book based on your progress.
First, don't be discouraged – many excellent drivers didn't pass first time. After your test, the examiner will explain exactly what went wrong. We'll arrange additional lessons focusing on those specific areas. You can rebook your test immediately, though availability varies. There's no limit to how many times you can take the test. The key is to understand why you failed and address those issues before your next attempt.
No! You can start practical lessons as soon as you have your provisional license. However, you MUST pass your theory test before you can book your practical test. We recommend starting theory preparation early and booking your theory test when you're about halfway through your practical training. This way, you'll have your theory certificate ready when you're test-ready practically.
These are vehicle safety questions asked at the start of your test. The 'tell me' question is answered while stationary (e.g., 'Tell me how you'd check the brakes are working'). The 'show me' question is answered while driving (e.g., 'Show me how you'd wash and clear the windscreen'). Getting one or both wrong only counts as one minor fault, so they're not something to worry about excessively. We'll practice all possible questions during your lessons.
Absolutely! Private practice with a friend or family member can significantly accelerate your learning. The supervising driver must be at least 21 years old and have held a full UK driving license for at least 3 years. The vehicle needs L plates displayed and valid insurance for learner drivers. We can advise on what to practice and provide guidance for your supervising driver.
Pass Plus is an optional course for new drivers who have passed their test. It covers six modules: town driving, all-weather driving, rural roads, night driving, dual carriageways, and motorways. Benefits include gaining confidence in situations you may not have experienced during lessons, plus many insurers offer discounts of 10-15% for Pass Plus holders. We recommend it for new drivers who want to build advanced skills safely.
